Welcome to Sauvie Island Academy!

We are a K-8 public charter school located on scenic Sauvie Island just outside of Portland, Oregon. Through the philosophy of place-based education, Sauvie Island Academy offers a unique educational experience to all our students. We give our students the opportunity to learn through the values of stewardship and by using the community and natural surroundings as a learning environment that extends beyond the classroom, immersing children in the local heritage and cultural landscape.

The Geology of Sauvie Island from the past to the future

Dr. Scott Burns, professor of Geology, P.S.U., will speak on the history of Sauvie Island, from the Missoula Flood (13,000 years ago) through the present, including the potential Cascadian Earthquake.

The Missoula Flood was responsible for much of our Northwest geology, including the Columbia River and Sauvie Island. The Missoula and the annual flooding of the Columbia is responsible for providing Sauvie Island with the richest agricultural soil in the Pacific Northwest.
